How to Make Raffia Tassel Earrings
Making your own earrings is certainly an experience. We’re going to try to make our lovely raffia tassel earrings today, so gather all your materials before we start. The last thing you want is running around trying to find some kind of supply you forgot.
Step 1: Create the Spiral
As you can see from the first picture in the guide, the earrings will feature a raffia spiral as the base of the earrings. So, let’s start creating this nice spiral. Grab the yarn and unravel a section, but don’t cut it.
getglue gunAnd put a little hot glue on the edge of the yarn. Roll the yarn over itself.
As you build the spiral, make sure to add more hot glue to keep the yarn together.
Make sure you also tightly coil the yarn so that the result is a perfect spiral.
Continue adding hot glue and pressing the next layer of yarn into it. Also, make sure the helix is as flat as possible, especially if the yarn will bend slightly.
Keep rolling the material, using hot glue as a way of holding it together.
You need to determine how big the raffia spirals are. We chose to make it about 3cm wide, but feel free to make it bigger or smaller to your liking. You really need to try to remember the size of the first spiral so you can make the second spiral the same size.
When you feel your raffia spiral is big enough, getScissors and cut off the excess wire.
You can make a second raffia spiral now, or a second earring once you’ve fully finished the first.
Step 2: Make Some Tassels
Next, we’ll make some tassels for our earrings. We have three of these for each earring, so it’s best to make them all at once.grab that piece cardboard and blue yarn and start wrapping around it. You might want to keep track of how many loops you’re doing here so you can do them all exactly the same.
When you complete one of the loops, you getScissorsand cut the thread.
get Round nose pliers and pick up a jump ring. Thread loop of blue yarn through open jump ring.
Use the pliers to close the loops as close as possible; you don’t want to close them all the way because you’ll need to open them again later.
catch gold yarn and start wrapping around the blue yarn loop below the jump ring. Make multiple passes.
Wrap the yarn tightly and evenly, making sure that each time the yarn is looped around the blue cord, it is in almost the same position.
Cut the string and tie a double knot so the yarn won’t unravel later.
Next you want to take your scissors and push one of the blades through the loop of yarn and snip it.
Then, trim the yarn so the threads are the same size. You’ll also want to try to set the same length for all the tassels.
Make all three tassels for the earrings – if you are making two earrings at the same time, make six.
Step 3: Let’s Hang the Earrings
We are making earrings so we need to make sure they will fit on your ears.get one ofeye needle and open the loop with your Round nose pliers.Push the open loop through the raffia spiral. Try to do this only through the top layer of the spiral.
Close the loop with pliers.
If yours are as long as ours, get pliers and cut some length off.
Take the round nose pliers and roll the end of the eye needle to form a small loop.
Get earring wire and thread the loop through the loop you created. Using the round nose pliers again and closing the loop, hold the earring wire in place.
Now you can hang your earrings!
Step 4: Add the Tassels
Next, we need to add the tassels. Since the hanging wire is already attached, the opposite location on the raffia spiral needs to be where you hang the first tassel. So, get the tassel you made and use your round nose pliers to open the jump ring.
Push the open jump ring through the raffia spiral, making sure to only go around the first segment.
Once the tassel is in place, use round nose pliers to close the jump ring.
Add the other two tassels in the same manner, making sure the distance between them is the same.
you are done! If you’ve been wearing both earrings at the same time, it’s time to test them out and put them on your ears. If you just finished the first, you need to start the second immediately. Try to make the two as similar as possible. You can’t make exactly the same handmade jewelry, but you can try to make it as similar as possible.
Da da! Look how cute they are! If you made them yourself, we’re sure you’ve customized them the way you see fit. If you’re making them for someone else, we hope you’ve considered their preferences.
The only thing you can really change is the tassels – for example, you can choose a different color for the thread, or make the tassels bigger or smaller. You can even add more tassels if you want more. It’s entirely up to you.
